Opening week one of ups and downs

Well week one is in the books and what a week it turned out to be. The fishing was excellent, with the exception of Tuesday (post cold front) which slowed the bite down a bit from the outstanding fishing (and weather) we experienced on Saturday for the opener. So what happened between Saturday and Tuesday? Well one of the unbelievable weather changes NW Ontario is noted for in the Spring occurred. Sunny and calm winds with a high near 70 on Saturday, gave way to heavy rains by mid-day Sunday which transitioned into snow by Sunday night and all day Monday. While the weather did cut back on the fishing time, it certainly did nothing to dampen the spirits of our regular opening day guests, as they were committed to having a great time in camp regardless of what Mother Nature threw at them. In true NW Ontario weather style, the cold front passed and the remainder of the week Tuesday thru Friday was absolutely outstanding with nary a cloud in the sky and warm temps again. What a week!

The weather did cause a delay in our rebuild of the roadside dock, which had been scheduled for last week. We started the process yesterday and expect in a couple more days to have it done. Otherwise, knock on wood, things are running pretty smoothly in camp and the fishing so far this week has been off the charts. We will try to share a few more photos the next time around.

One Response to Opening week one of ups and downs

  1. Would love to come up and see you guys. Will try to talk my wife into it. love reading all your blogs and emails keep them coming. Extremely busy here at the hospital. We are right at the end of a $20 million Dollar expansion project which I have been very much involved in. Lots of weekends and late nights, would love to get away for a week. To go somewhere where there would be no cell phones and no way to track where I’m. Right now however I am not allowed to have vacation until after we move into the new facility. Always love seeing the pictures of how life should be. Good friends, lots of wide-open spaces, and beautiful scenery. Hope to talk to both of you soon.

Peffley's Wilderness Camp is a family owned and operated camp. Dave has been fishing Wabaskang Lake for over 25 years and was previously a guest of this camp for 12 years prior to purchasing the camp in 2005. I am a proud supporter of our military and offer a nice discount during the month of July to our guests who have also served. I have three daughters ranging in ages from 16-21 who spend much of their summer with us in camp and have totally embraced the wilderness experience we offer. They have for years referred to it as the "best summer experience ever".

While rarely necessary on our lake, because I do have a very good working knowledge on how and where to fish on Wabaskang Lake and our portage waters, I will guide groups if asked to. Otherwise, I am always happy to share information with our guests and provide them well marked lake maps so they can start catching fish their first day in camp.

I pride myself on running a very clean and well managed camp with your satisfaction our top priority. Many guests who have fished from this camp for over 20 years, and several more that have fished here for over 30 years and even some over 40 years.
