And just like that… it’s August

Well another couple of weeks have FLOWN by and here we are wrapping up July. What a month of weather we have had. Several severe storms, hail, high winds and more rain than I can ever remember for the month of July. Just what we needed… (that’s dripping sarcasm btw) The worst of the storms came in fast on a Sunday night (July 17) with high winds and driving rain that whipped up the lake from dead calm to 3 footers in mere seconds. Wow! With the strain of some additional private boats in camp that week on the docks the strain caused the floating docks to break in two places and we scrambled through pouring rain, lightning and thunder to get fixes in place to hold them together for the night. Great fun! As always there is a blessing in any crisis and the one here is that the storm hit early evening while we were awake and on the docks, it sure coulda been worse.

It’s raining AGAIN, even as I type this up… the good news is despite the un-needed extra water it has given us mostly more comfortable temperatures. We did have a few days of stifling heat, bright sun, lake dead calm kind of weather that slowed the bite for a few days, but otherwise despite the mayflies also hatching the bite really has been pretty good. Certainly plenty of walleyes to eat every day and take home limits. Perch fishing has remained excellent as well as the smallmouth fishing and pike fishing which have provided guests a lot of action and some real trophies to top off their trips.

I did have some family in camp one week too with my future son in law Cody and daughters Emily and Allison. We missed having Megan with us, but she’s been busy “doctorin'” as she is out of med school and beginning her medical rotations. We had a great week, ate like Kings and Queens, spent quite a bit of time on the water and just generally enjoyed the moment. Don’t know how many more of those “moments” we will be able to share in camp together in the future so I think this week was cherished by us all maybe a little more.

Otherwise, with the extra rain we have been getting it has slowed down the dropping of the lake level some. It is still going down but at a slower pace and we could easily lose another 2 feet of water and still be in great shape. There are a number of dock repairs still needing to be done but we really need the water to go down more to get at some of what will need to be fixed. In the meantime, the “temporary” work arounds we put in place to allow us to get opened in May are still working and we manage the best we can despite the sometimes unsightly appearance on the docks of what it takes to make it all work. We sure appreciate all our guests who have been supportive and understanding of the situation and appreciative of being able to fulfill their trips despite the circumstances we have faced this year. At the end of the day, the fishing, scenery, serenity, laughs and memories will always win out over a damaged dock!

We look forward to the balance of our season, still have a few cabins open and some outstanding fishing ahead of us in August and September as we usually do. If you need a getaway and would like to get up here to camp, please give us a shout!

Until next time, stay safe, be good and hope to see ya on the water.

Peffley's Wilderness Camp is a family owned and operated camp. Dave has been fishing Wabaskang Lake for over 25 years and was previously a guest of this camp for 12 years prior to purchasing the camp in 2005. I am a proud supporter of our military and offer a nice discount during the month of July to our guests who have also served. I have three daughters ranging in ages from 16-21 who spend much of their summer with us in camp and have totally embraced the wilderness experience we offer. They have for years referred to it as the "best summer experience ever".

While rarely necessary on our lake, because I do have a very good working knowledge on how and where to fish on Wabaskang Lake and our portage waters, I will guide groups if asked to. Otherwise, I am always happy to share information with our guests and provide them well marked lake maps so they can start catching fish their first day in camp.

I pride myself on running a very clean and well managed camp with your satisfaction our top priority. Many guests who have fished from this camp for over 20 years, and several more that have fished here for over 30 years and even some over 40 years.
