2023 Season kicks off in high gear!

What an awesome opening two weeks of fishing we have had. Great weather, albeit a little too breezy a few days during opening week and much too warm for week two, still made for some excellent conditions to hammer on some walleye, northern, smallmouth and perch and that’s exactly what everyone in camp did. The biggest complaint so far for the season? “we are having trouble finding walleye under 18 inches”. Oh, the problems…

It really hasn’t mattered what species our guests targeted these two weeks. Whether it be walleye, smallmouth, pike or perch, the fish have been plentiful and aggressive in the rapidly warming water. Walleye up to 29″ with a lot of fish 19-24″, smallmouth topping out at almost 5 pounds, northern pike in the low 40″s with many in the mid- 30 inch range and plenty of perch for those who targeted them up to 13+”. As a bonus, one group went crappie fishing this week and brought back 53 beauties averaging 12 1/2″. It has been an incredible start to the season. If you want to get in on some of this fantastic spring fishing in 2024 we will have some VERY limited openings so call us early!

Our annual Wisconsin crew this week, despite a late arrival by two guys in the group are on pace for 1,200 walleye this week. Not their best year, but c’mon 1,200 walleye? What’s to complain about that, eh? Overall the consensus from guests during the two weeks “fantastic”. Looking forward to many more weeks like this.

For those coming up tomorrow and the near future, please be advised that a restricted fire ban has been enacted in our zone so no open fires are allowed for any reason. You can still shore lunch with a portable stove.

When you need to unplug, we still have some limited August and September openings which will also provide some incredible multi-species fishing. One of my personal favorite times to fish Wabaskang, August and September never disappoints.

Thanks for reading the update and follow the Facebook page for pictures and other updates. I’ll try to round up some week 2 pics to get posted.

Till next time, good fishing…Dave

Peffley's Wilderness Camp is a family owned and operated camp. Dave has been fishing Wabaskang Lake for over 25 years and was previously a guest of this camp for 12 years prior to purchasing the camp in 2005. I am a proud supporter of our military and offer a nice discount during the month of July to our guests who have also served. I have three daughters ranging in ages from 16-21 who spend much of their summer with us in camp and have totally embraced the wilderness experience we offer. They have for years referred to it as the "best summer experience ever".

While rarely necessary on our lake, because I do have a very good working knowledge on how and where to fish on Wabaskang Lake and our portage waters, I will guide groups if asked to. Otherwise, I am always happy to share information with our guests and provide them well marked lake maps so they can start catching fish their first day in camp.

I pride myself on running a very clean and well managed camp with your satisfaction our top priority. Many guests who have fished from this camp for over 20 years, and several more that have fished here for over 30 years and even some over 40 years.
