New website is up and Fall update

Hi all, well it has certainly been a busy fall this year. It actually started before leaving camp, as Milissa’s mother (Ruby) passed away unexpectedly during the last week of the season. This resulted in a quick 48 hour trip back home to Indiana for the services, only to return to camp to finish the last of our shut down for 2 days and then a drive back home again. Fortunately, the flight home was uneventful and on time. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the flight(s) back to camp. The day I was scheduled to fly back to camp was the day of the fire in a control tower near Chicago. This delayed my flight out of South Bend several hours resulting in me missing my connecting flight in Minneapolis back to International Falls. With the next flight out of Minneapolis a full seven hours away, I made the decision to rent a car and drive the four hours back to International Falls, retrieve my vehicle at the airport and continue on another 3 1/2 hours to camp.

We wish to thank everyone for the sympathies extended to us during this very difficult time. Thank you very much.

I was able to spend some much needed time afield this fall deer hunting. The tree stand was a good way to rest, recover and reflect after another great season in camp despite the unfortunate and untimely passing of Ruby. While the deer hunting season was one of the slowest we have had here in Indiana recently, I did manage to take my first deer with a bow after taking up bow hunting just last season. There is not a lot of venison in the freezer this year, but we are thankful for what we have.

The holiday season is upon us now and we hope everyone enjoyed getting their Christmas letter/season recap in the mail. That is quite a production here and takes a lot of time to pull off the whole process. As you may have noticed, our website has taken on a new look. We would welcome your feedback and certainly if you find any problems (as there always are when you undertake a project like this) to please bring them to our attention in the event we have not discovered them.

We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday Season!

Warm enough for ya?

Chances are if you are from almost anywhere in the midwest U.S. your answer is “yes”. It really hasn’t been much better here to be honest. Temps in the upper 70’s to mid 80’s with very high humidity has made it just a little“sticky” the past couple of weeks in camp. The fish don’t seem toContinue Reading

Still fishing and killin’ bears

More about the fishing when I get around to writing the fishing report for the website, but suffice it to say here in the blog that the last couple of weeks has seen some continued excellent fishing for our guests. So good in fact, that although camp is “officially” closed, we still have a groupContinue Reading

2010- A season of memories…..

Sandwiched between Don Strafford’s 49th consecutive year in camp (opening week) and Jim Wertz’s group first ever visit to Canada during week 19 of the season, was another incredible season of fishing, friendship, fun and memories at Bear Claw Camp. New faces blended in with the regulars week in and out, to enjoy the splendorContinue Reading

Bear Down, Temperature UP….

Our first bear hunters are in camp this week and it took Jared VanLanen just three nights in his stand to harvest a beautifully coated sow on his first bear hunt in Canada. His hunting partner Dave Winkel ( a regular hunter with us) passed on two bears last night, but with some good fortuneContinue Reading

Happy Holidays!

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I know in our household we certainly have many blessings that we are thankful for, and as always, it was great to see family and friends that we don’t see as frequently as we might like. Hard to believe that December is here already. Seems like I just pulled intoContinue Reading

Fourteen down, four to go….bear hunting on deck

As it always does, another season is flying by with us beginning the fifteenth week of our eighteen week operating season. With so much of the season past already, you might think that it’s time to put things on “autopilot” and cruise through the last four weeks. Unfortunately that’s just not the way it worksContinue Reading

MIA?? Shows underway

No. Not really missing in action, just taking some time off from blogging and focusing on matters here at home. We trust that everyone’s new year is off to a great start, and with February right around the corner, some of you no doubt, will start thinking about your upcoming trip to camp. (like usContinue Reading

Peffley's Wilderness Camp is a family owned and operated camp. Dave has been fishing Wabaskang Lake for over 25 years and was previously a guest of this camp for 12 years prior to purchasing the camp in 2005. I am a proud supporter of our military and offer a nice discount during the month of July to our guests who have also served. I have three daughters ranging in ages from 16-21 who spend much of their summer with us in camp and have totally embraced the wilderness experience we offer. They have for years referred to it as the "best summer experience ever".

While rarely necessary on our lake, because I do have a very good working knowledge on how and where to fish on Wabaskang Lake and our portage waters, I will guide groups if asked to. Otherwise, I am always happy to share information with our guests and provide them well marked lake maps so they can start catching fish their first day in camp.

I pride myself on running a very clean and well managed camp with your satisfaction our top priority. Many guests who have fished from this camp for over 20 years, and several more that have fished here for over 30 years and even some over 40 years.
